CODING MADE EASY
For many vehicle models, no coding is required at all. However, models requiring coding are becoming increasingly common due to the growing digitisation of vehicles.
Whether coding is mandatory or simply recommended depending on equipment specifications can be determined by referring to relevant catalogues and installation instructions.
Modern wiring harnesses from JAEGER automotive featuring CAN bus technology offer far more than just illuminating a trailer. They enable or directly influence the functionality of advanced assistance systems.
For some vehicle models, coding is mandatory, for instance, to activate the legally required trailer indicator monitoring system.
In some cases, however, coding is not mandatory but optional or recommended to ensure equipment-dependent functions. This can be the case, for example, with parking aid deactivation, where this functionality is only achievable through coding. Such cases are typically due to equipment-specific requirements. Without coding, the legally required trailer lighting and indicator monitoring would still function, but certain assistance systems would not. As a result, the vehicle’s full potential would not be utilised, and, more importantly, critical safety features would remain inoperative.
Coding unlocks the full range of functions (depending on the vehicle's equipment). Therefore, JAEGER automotive always recommends coding, even when it is only suggested as an option.
Our installation instructions provide detailed guidance on the diagnostic process and include any necessary codes (currently excluding SWaP codes for VW). These can be used with both the vehicle manufacturer’s OE diagnostic tools and commonly available aftermarket devices.
